This week, I've been mostly...
...using Open Office to create pretty graphs. It has mostly worked very well indeed, but see if you can find the really obvious bug in the graph below. I've still not figured out how to fix it, since the data is correct - just the labels on the graph are a bit wrong. Suggestions to the usual blog-at-signal2noise.co.uk address.

I'm in unseasonably warm Bucharest at the moment. There's a beautiful mix of
old and new buildings and some fantastic Eastern European architecture to be
seen all around. The only big change I've noticed since Romania joined the EU
has been that the huge amount of cigarette advertising seems to be hugely cut
down. There are empty billboards throughout the city, which I assume carried
the massive amount of cigarette advertising I noticed the last time I was
here.
Courtesy of my camera phone, here's the view out of my 7th floor hotel room
window, on to Calae Victoria below, one of the two main streets in Bucharest.

Well, it might not be the best image ever, but it made me laugh ;-)

Sometimes karma just hands you stuff on a plate. While on the way to work I started writing a blog posting about Dublin public transport. I'll post it tomorrow. I think the photos of my train trip home from work, during which we stopped in Donabate because the train caught fire kind of makes my point for me. The glow under the train carriage in the fourth picture is the glow of flames. The fire engine turned up about 10 minutes after the fire was put out.
I'd like to make a special mention of the honesty in the announcements on behalf of Iarannród Eireann over the public address, in which is was claimed that trains were delayed "due to a train being examined for safety." I'm glad they examine their trains for safety AFTER they go on fire while jam packed full of people - perhaps they could try doing it before filling it with hundreds of commuters next time?

I'm now less surprised that the rail system is less than perfect in this country. All the clocks in a railway station are supposed to be synchronised, but here's a picture I took this morning at Bradford Interchange. For the record, the other set of platforms (all of maybe 3 metres away) had two more clocks, one of which was broken and the other was merrily displaying another different time. comedy++...

The weather is amazingly good - people are actually getting sunburned. Lots of
good music, great food, ice-cream (both the Eastern and Western
varieties) and loads of other stuffs... It's great :-) Also,
there's a fun fair there - about twice as big as the funfair we went to a few
weeks back which advertised itself as being 'huge.' If anyone has suitable
superlatives for the size of this funfair, feel free to e-mail to the usual
address ;-)

Disaster has been averted as those extremely kind folk at NOFAP (Nonado
Overseas Food Aid Project) a division of nonado.net PLC (Purely for
Laughs Crew) have couriered some more teabags to me. Also, thanks to the
delivery man who kindly informed me that my front garden was full of wasps.
Erm... Thanks for that... I didn't put the wasps there, or invite them
in or anything... it kind of goes with the territory and the fact that I have
loads of flowers in my front garden.
Here's a picture of the Limerick NOFAP aid package, along with a picture of
the writing on the outside of the Cork Chapter's donation, presumably written
by some overzealous customs / security official who was wondering wtf these
nutters would be sending teabags to England... probably assuming they were
some bizarre bomb making substance or cocaine or something :-)

Who could have thought there was so much green in London? Had a walk around the park - reminded me very much of Phoenix Park in Dublin. There was a wedding happening in the Lodge and a Chinese dragon, but unfortunately the guys doing the dragon were having a rest so I didn't get any pictures. It did take me a while to figure out why there were a bunch of lads with shiny trousers on ;-)

For Mr. Jakma, who is never known to be grumpy, obtuse, pedantic or embittered on IRC at all, oh no, never... well... hardly ever (cue chorus: "What never?..." etc...) ;-) Here's a lovely picture of my tea mug...

And after all my efforts to finally make a Southpark-a-like figure, this is
the response I get from Niall:
Yeah it was good. And by good I mean it was crap so myself and Maeve came up with a better one. Thanks Niall (and Maeve...) The pair of you seem to have constructive criticism down to a fine art ;-)

The weather still being good and it being the bank holiday weekend - we decided to take in the Fun Fair down the road. Róisín was quite keen to experience candyfloss (she's had some before and knows she likes it) and we were thankfully clever enough to dissuade her from having any until after she had tried (most) of the rides.

After an extended period of being prodded to produce a Southpark-a-like figure for myself, I have finally produced this thing:

Apart from the winds, the weather was beautiful, so we tok the opportunity to have a wander around the pituresque canal in Bingley. Even better, we actually got to watch two barges being brought through the locks.

Somewhat akin to living in the jungle, having a small child about the place very quickly teaches you to check your shoes thoroughly before putting them on. I think this one might be art...

Apparently plugging a USB device into a Windows box requires you to reboot the
machine. In fact, my machine was so adamant that I needed a reboot that it
displayed it's trademark Blue Screen of Death, daring me to try and continue my
computing tasks without rebooting after plugging a USB device in.
Thanks Microsoft.

We had a plethora of visitors over the weekend and got a load of Sinéad's furniture and boxes and boxes of her stuff from her old house. Some of it has been unboxed and put away...
Aaaaanyway, I took some random pictures because we went out walking and the day was nice and sunny. We had torrential rain the next day, so it's all evened out again now.

I've finally given into pressure and managed to overcome my extreme laziness and made a little script that generates thumbnails for my gallery postings. I'll backport the existing gallery postings to use the generated thumbnails over the next couple of days, but I'm pretty busy at the moment so it may take some time.
I've also created a blog for The Priestley so hopefully there will be some photos and stuff there soon. URL for the blog will be released shortly.

Eventually I've had the chance to clear the photographs off my phone and put them up for all to see. Paddy's Day this year started with a charity gig for the Lord Mayor's Trust in Bradford. Irish music and dance provided the centrepiece for an indoor market of Patrick's Day, Easter related and local arts, crafts and produce. Lots of fun and lots of money raised for local charity.

We had some friends over at the weekend (review of the all important
TerrorVision gig coming soon) and we decided to go and see some big old
machines on the Sunday. I took some pictures, presented here for your viewing
pleasure, or something :-)
